Oh heck, at this late date in the school year, I feel I might need to meet
everyone at a senior's night at the local Denneys. :) I'm tired!

Tell me about it Monica, I just got off the phone with a parent who
spent the whole year avoiding meeting me, now that I failed her kid
last marking period, she wants to suddenly meet me. And, she did not
even say that was why, she feels that her daughter could not do all
that I am saying she does. Right. The kid is disgusting.

Sort of makes me wonder whether or not the parent spends any time with the
child or whether the parent is in serious denial. <sigh>

Serious denial I believe.
That's ok, I got the dean to call the parent today. Myself and two
other teachers got on his back about her. LOL

need only to meet the parents.

I don't know. I've seen a lot of kids who make me wonder about their
parential units. I've seen others who make me know that their parents are
actually parenting. Understanding this is why I didn't go into teaching
kids.

All I do is open my eyes and watch. I think a lot of people are in serious
denial about their children and their own parenting abilities. All kids will
try to get away with things and without proper parenting, they will become
horrible to behold. Unfortunately, too many people think having a child is
the most difficult part.

I'm thinking about teaching, but it will be "adults." At least they can wipe
their own noses. :)

You have a point there. However, we do need good teachers, who are not
afraid of the system, or the kids. You sound like you would be good.

:) Thanks. It's the system that bothers me. I used to work with kids in a
system that required kids and parents to cooperate (not as a teacher, but to
help special needs kids). We were able to work wonders. I hear too many
stories from too many teachers that tell me that the current system does not
allow this strict attitude. I will bend over backwards to help a child who
is willing to be respectful and to work hard. I don't think I'd do well in a
classroom where when a student hits a teacher, the teacher is not allowed to
"lay hands on" the child--not in an abusive way, but to take the kid's hands
and march the kid off to a place where the situation can be dealt with. In
the big metro system here, the kids can shoot the teacher, but the teacher
can't do anything but say "Johnny, that's not acceptable behavior." Then,
when the parential unit shows up, he/she says, "My little Johnny wouldn't do
that. You shouldn't have yelled at my little angel."

I think there are some fabulous teachers out there. Many of them are leaving
my area due to just such situations. I admire those who stay. I've read your
posts in the past and I admire what you were willing to put up with. I guess
I just don't have a death wish. :)

Bless all of those who work hard every day to educate children and risk and
endure such terrible treatment. One day, maybe those who have the power will
make changes that will allow discipline and respect to rule so that all
children can have a better learning environment. That will bring many good
teachers back into the occupation.

Never happen, they let the genie out when they gave children more
rights then adults, can never go back now. To make matters worse,
parents are all sue happy, so they no longer back the teachers. I
mean, why back a teacher, when you can claim verbal abuse, or any
abuse and make $$ off of the city. There so many lawsuits against the
city it is unreal. It is truely sad what goes on in our school system.
My old school was the worst example of a system gone wrong. That
school had over 10 million in lawsuits against it, not just about
teachers and children, but about protecting children from each other.
A situation I find hilarious, we are not allowed to touch them, but we
have to prevent them from hurting each other. They know they can walk
all over us, and we are supposed to teach them. Last week, was a great
example. A child was in the hallway cursing a teacher, refusing to go
to any classroom. The Assistant Principle came along and put out her
hand and ask the child to walk with her. The child started screaming,
"Your hitting me, stop hitting me!" When the teacher said "She's not
hitting you, what are you talking about? The child screamed louder
"Can't you see she's hitting me!" "Stop hitting me, Stop hurting me!!"
This was in my current school. Speaking of my current school, things
started great, but are going downhill as well. I am hoping it is just
the end of year nonsense, but I fear it is worse.

Red who is sorry for the long post.

I don't know about that - I see the neighbor kids around here and see why
they act the way they do, when the parents aren't home, or when the kids are
bossing the parents around and the parents take it!! Us "outsiders"

Peg, you have always seen with both eyes wide open, thats one of the

there are fewer and fewer like you, who see the reality of what is
happening with our children. And, sadly, everything becomes a lawsuit
